Desertification threatens Syria
DAMASCUS, 15 June 2010 (IRIN) - An irreversible degeneration of some of Syria’s landmass could occur because of three consecutive years of drought, warns the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
“If desertification is not controlled, it threatens the land and our heritage,” Abdulla Tahir Bin Yehia, head of FAO in Syria, said. “The situation is terrible in Syria and has been worsened by the past years of low rainfall.”"

IRIN, IPS Examine Pending U.S. Legislation To Address Global Hunger, FGM - Kaiser Global Health
IRIN reports on the Global Food Security Act, a bill aimed at expanding the U.S. government's role in combating hunger around the world. The legislation is co-sponsored by Sens. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.) and Bob Casey (D-Pa.).
The bill, which IRIN reports is expected to pass the Senate before moving on to the House of Representatives, "would allocate several billion dollars over five years to research and development, to enhance 'food security, agriculture productivity, rural development, poverty and malnutrition alleviation, and environmental sustainability.'" It would also create a "food czar" position to coordinate the implementation of the bill. The new funding in the bill is "'in addition, and complementary, to food aid provided through the U.S. Department of Agriculture,' most of which is not permitted to be purchased in the areas where a food crisis is occurring," the news service notes.

Rescuing Ecosystems Can Save Trillions Of Dollars
In the study released before World Environment Day on June 5, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) said nations could boost their economies by replenishing dying forests, marshes, coral reefs and riverbanks.
'What are the real economic value of some of these resources? Wetlands, of which half have been destroyed, have an economic value of $7 trillion per year,' Tim Kasten, a UNEP natural resources expert, told reporters in Nairobi.
'All together these services are providing up to $70 trillion per year of economic benefit,' Kasten said."

Needs growing for millions facing hunger in Sahel region, UN agency warns
28 May 2010 – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today warned of growing needs in the Eastern Sahel region of West Africa, one of the most destitute regions in the world, where some 10 million people are facing extreme hunger due to drought and poor harvests.
Thomas Yanga, WFP Regional Director for West Africa, said that despite efforts by governments, humanitarian agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the situation in eastern Mali, northern Cameroon, Chad and Niger is critical.
Hunger is pushing more and more people from the countryside into cities where they are searching for food to feed their families, he noted."
Ensuring food security for all-Comments & Analysis-Opinion-The Economic Times
The architects of the food security bill have either forgotten the Rome declaration or ignored it. Not only that it has defined food security in a narrow sense — minimum quantity of foodgrains to poor families at subsidised rates — it is also inconsistent with the fundamental right to life of every citizen, particularly when one looks at the issue in the context of various Supreme Court orders."
Needed: An ethical approach to development partnerships - Mahendra Shah
